In the early hours of February 12, 2021, the life of Christopher Bell, a 39-year-old Black / African American male, was cut short in Belton, Missouri. The Belton Police Department responded to reports of gunshots shortly after midnight and discovered Bell in the parking lot of an apartment complex located at East 125th Street and Spring Valley Road.
He had sustained gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into Bell's death quickly pointed to 38-year-old Charles Baldwin Jr. as the primary suspect. According to court documents, the events leading up to the fatal shooting involved a third individual and a planned robbery. This individual told detectives that he and Bell had gone to the apartment complex with the intention of robbing Baldwin, to whom he owed approximately $1,800 for methamphetamine. He stated that he and Bell knew Baldwin had money.
Upon arriving at the apartment complex, the third man went inside to speak with a woman, leaving Bell and Baldwin outside. When he came back out, Baldwin allegedly claimed that Bell had just robbed him and then began shooting in the direction of Bell's car. The witness reported that after the initial shots, he got into the car and urged Bell to drive away, only to realize that Bell had been fatally wounded. He then pulled Bell's body from the driver's seat, leaving him in the parking lot, and fled in Bell's vehicle.
Following the shooting, a manhunt for Charles Baldwin Jr. was initiated, with authorities describing him as armed and dangerous. He was eventually apprehended in Grain Valley, Missouri, after a collaborative effort between local police and the U.S. Marshals fugitive task force, who had tracked his vehicle. The Cass County Prosecutor's Office charged Baldwin with second-degree murder, armed criminal action, unlawful use of a weapon, and being a felon in possession of a weapon. The other individual involved was also arrested and faced charges of robbery, second-degree murder, armed criminal action, and unlawful possession of a firearm.
