On a quiet Friday morning in Indianapolis, the life of 67-year-old Thomas Tefft, a White male, was tragically cut short in a sudden and violent home invasion. It was March 15, 2013, and Tefft was enjoying coffee with his wife in their Harcourt Springs Place home when an intruder broke in. The suspect, described as a Black male in his 20s wearing a ski mask, entered their home through a back patio door.
As the terrifying scene unfolded, Tefft’s wife managed to escape to a bathroom and
call 911. While she was on the phone, she heard a gunshot. Her husband of nearly 45 years had been fatally wounded. The intruder then fled the scene in the couple's black 2009 Hyundai Sonata. The stolen vehicle was recovered by police a few days later, abandoned in an alley.
In the wake of the tragedy, Tefft's family made an emotional public plea for information that would lead to the arrest of the person responsible for his death. They described him as a loving husband, father, and grandfather who had moved to Indianapolis from New York with his wife in 1996 to enjoy a peaceful retirement. The community was left shaken by the senseless act of violence in what was considered a safe neighborhood.
Despite the investigation and the recovery of the stolen car, no arrests have ever been made in connection with the murder of Thomas Tefft. The case has since gone cold, leaving his family and the community with unanswered questions and a killer still at large. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department continues to list the case as an unsolved homicide, a painful reminder of a life taken too soon.
