I've been thinking a lot about the Hamilton Avenue murders and the unimaginable grief that the Covarrubias family’s relatives must have gone through. What really sticks with me is the ripple effect a crime like this has on a community. David Covarrubias was only 8, just starting to discover the world around him. Imagine having your world shattered in such a violent way. I feel deeply for the teachers and classmates at David and Alberto's school, who had to cope with the loss. Schools are like second homes for kids that age and losing a friend so tragically must have left a lasting impact. If anyone here is from the Indianapolis area and remembers how their community coped back in 2006, I’d love to hear about the support systems or vigils that might have been organized. It's so important that we remember these victims as the people they were and not just a statistic in a horrific crime.
