Has anyone heard more details about the flares Dwight and Kaino fired that night? I find it puzzling that after their initial SOS flare, they later resorted to firing a non-distress flare. Could it have been a signal to indicate something specific happened to them or perhaps they switched to the wrong one under stress? I wonder if there were any reports about the types of flares they had on the Dawn. It's heartbreaking for the families left without closure, but I'm hoping this detail might spark someone’s memory who was involved in the search or was there that night.
Has anyone else dug into the weather patterns from that week in 1981 when Dwight and Kaino went missing? I’ve been trying to get a sense of how intense the storm actually was around Kodiak Island. I found a couple of old articles detailing severe weather warnings and the impact on local fishing conditions. It seems like those 6-8' breakers could’ve been even more intense further out.
