The unforgiving Alaskan weather, however, quickly turned against them, stranding them as the seas grew increasingly rough. As darkness descended, the situation for Florin and Dixon became more dire. From the shore, they signaled the Cougar with an SOS flash, followed by the firing of a distress flare, a clear indication of their escalating peril. Later, another non-distress flare was fired. The crew of the Cougar attempted a rescue that night, but the treacherous seas, with waves reportedly reaching six to eight feet, forced them to turn back. The churning waters and violent breakers near the beach made any approach to the island impossible. The hope of a swift rescue was swallowed by the storm and the vast, indifferent wilderness. When the crew of the Cougar were finally able to make it to shore the following day, November 13, 1981, their search yielded a heartbreaking discovery: there was no trace of Dwight Florin, Kaino Dixon, or their skiff. The island that was meant to be a temporary hunting ground had seemingly swallowed them whole, leaving behind no clues to their fate. Both men are now presumed to be deceased. This tragic event is a somber reminder of the power and unpredictability of the Alaskan environment. The case of Dwight Florin is one of many maritime losses that have occurred in these waters, a testament to the risks faced by those who make their living from the sea.
