I want to talk about the impact on Rafael Ortiz’s family and community following his tragic death back in '08. I can't even begin to imagine the devastating loss his loved ones must have felt and how that kind of tragedy echoes through a community. It's concerning that this wasn't an isolated incident but rather part of a larger issue of violence that affects so many in Chicago. It's frustrating to think about how many families endure similar heartbreak because of gun violence and how each victim's story, like Rafael’s, underscores the urgency to create safer environments. I really hope that in the years since, those who knew Rafael have found some measure of peace and support from their community and that the efforts to increase safety and provide resources have made a difference for others at risk. It's unimaginable to face such pain, and my thoughts go out to all who have loved and lost.
