Hey everyone, I’ve been following the case of Su from Cold Bay and have been racking my brain about the skiff itself. ? Does anyone know if the skiff had any mechanical issues or any history of steering problems? I grew up around boats, and I know that sudden sharp turns can sometimes be due to faulty steering or an unexpected obstacle in the water. The waters near the Aleutian Chain can be tricky, and I’m just curious if there's any background on the skiff that might shed some light on what happened. It’s such a tough and isolated area — hoping for any insights from local folks or fishing enthusiasts who know the ins and outs of the region! ??
It's baffling to me how quickly things can go wrong during what should've been a routine fishing trip. I was reading about Su's case and can't help but wonder about the conditions out there in Cold Bay at the time. Was there a sudden gust of wind or a rogue wave that caused the skiff to veer so sharply? It seems odd that only one of them was rescued immediately. Were there any other boats nearby when it happened, or was it just sheer luck that the companion was found in time? Without a flotation device, I fear the worst, but I'm clinging to hope there's more to uncover here about what might've happened to Su. Does anyone have any insight or updates about the search efforts or weather conditions in that area around the time of the accident?
Did anyone find it strange that Su wasn’t wearing a flotation device? Even if you're confident on the water, it seems risky, especially in an area as unpredictable as the Aleutians. I know some fishermen don’t wear them because they can be uncomfortable or restrictive, but the conditions up there are no joke. Perhaps it was just a moment of complacency or did he plan to put it on later? I’m curious if anyone knows if he typically avoided safety gear or if this was just an unfortunate oversight.
