Hi everyone,
I've been reflecting on the devastating loss of Lashon-Lofton Harris, and something that's been particularly haunting is the location of the incident. It happened in the parking lot of Greater Dry Ridge Missionary Baptist Church—a place that's supposed to be a sanctuary of peace and safety. For this tragedy to unfold in such a sacred space just makes it so much more gut-wrenching. I imagine that the church and its members have had a difficult time reconciling this violent act with the values and teachings that the church stands for.
For the community, I can only hope that the memory of Lashon's life and spirit will lead to increased support systems and open conversations about domestic violence. We must change the narrative and ensure that places like our churches also become safe havens in every sense of the word—a place where victims can find refuge and help. I think it's crucial we emphasize the importance of creating environments where anyone experiencing abuse feels that they can reach out and can do so without stigma or shame.
My heart goes out to Lashon's family and friends, who are enduring this unimaginable pain. It's essential that we remember Lashon's legacy not just in our discussions but in our actions to prevent such tragedies in the future.
Sending strength and support to all those who loved her.
Take care,
