Hey everyone,
I’ve been following the Kirk Passmore case for a while now, and something’s been on my mind—why wasn’t Kirk wearing a flotation device? I know it's common for seasoned surfers to ride without one, especially at well-known spots like Leftovers, but considering the high-surf warning that day, it might’ve made a difference.
I’m curious if any surf veterans here think the culture around flotation devices has changed since Kirk’s disappearance, especially with those massive wave days in Hawaii. Are people more cautious now or is it still the norm to go without? Feel like there's a lot to learn about balancing the thrill with safety.
Aloha,

I've been following Kirk Passmore's case and something that's been gnawing at me is the decision not to wear a flotation device. As someone who's surfed for years, I know there's a sort of unwritten rule where really experienced folks often opt out of wearing them, especially when it comes to maintaining full mobility on the board. But with waves that big and a high-surf warning in place, I wonder how much that decision could've played into what happened. Did anyone else find it odd, or was it just a typical expert choice given the conditions? It's tough to think about how such a seasoned surfer could still encounter such a catastrophic situation. Maybe sharing ideas on safety measures practiced by fellow surfers might help prevent future tragedies like this.
Has anyone else noticed that Kirk Passmore's case brings up some serious questions about surfing safety protocols when conditions are extreme? I’ve been reading up on it, and the lack of a flotation device was mentioned. I get that experienced surfers sometimes go without, but given the conditions that day with the high-surf warning, maybe we need to talk more about safety measures. I can’t help but wonder if things might have been different if he'd been wearing one. Also, does anyone know if there’s been any push for legislation or policy changes in Hawaii regarding this? Would be interesting to see if any good can come from such a tragic situation.
