I’ve been thinking a lot about the role mental health played in the Arvelo case. It’s truly difficult to wrap one's head around the pain and turmoil Carmen must have been experiencing. It’s clear she needed more support and intervention, which makes it all the more tragic that it ended as it did. Understanding mental illness and its impact on actions is crucial, but it doesn’t take away from the suffering Arturo, Hermalinda, and their loved ones endured. What really strikes me is how ruinous unaddressed mental health issues can be, not just for those who are struggling, but for those around them too. If anyone else has insights or experiences with supporting family members with mental health struggles, please share. It feels like we need more conversations about this to hopefully prevent such tragedies in the future. My heart goes out to all affected by this incredible loss.
