I recently came across the story of Officer Henry A. Stotko and felt compelled to learn more about how his community coped in the aftermath of his tragic death in 1905. Reading about his dedication and the senseless way his life was taken really hit me hard. I can't imagine the pain his wife and fellow officers must have felt during that time.
What's so shocking is the way the suspects treated him after the shooting. Taking his badge and pinning it to his pants seems like such a cruel act. It feels like it was meant to mock not just him, but the entire police force. It makes me wonder if this kind of behavior from criminals was common back then. Were law enforcement officers often seen as targets?
If anyone has more information on how the Spokane community responded or any details about how his widow managed after his death, I'd love to hear about it. We often talk about the victims, but the ripple effects of such a tragedy can be long-lasting for those left behind.
