Does anyone else find it deeply troubling how the concept of “reasonable force” seems so subjective, especially in cases like Rocendo Arias'? From what I read, Arias was holding an airsoft gun, which for those who don't know, looks like a real firearm but is actually non-lethal. It makes you wonder — could this have been handled differently if the situation was approached with more caution or dialogue?
I'm not trying to oversimplify the complexities officers face, but it feels like there should be more emphasis on de-escalation, particularly when approaching someone who is asleep and supposedly impaired. Imagine waking up abruptly in that scenario — confusion is a natural response, not aggression.
My heart goes out to Arias's family. I can’t begin to fathom the pain they must be enduring, not just from losing a loved one, but also from feeling like justice hasn’t been served. I truly hope the attention this case is getting leads to meaningful dialogue and reform in handling similar situations in the future. Thoughts?
