I was looking into the Washington Navy Yard shooting and found myself really moved by the details of Mike Ridgell's actions that day. It's clear he was a true hero. From everything I've read, Ridgell seemed to have spent his life looking out for others, first with the Maryland State Police and then with his work as a security guard. I can only imagine the kind of courage it took to be in his position during such a terrifying situation. Hearing about how he always prioritized the safety of those around him makes this loss feel even more profound. It's frustrating to think about all the systemic failures that might have kept Aaron Alexis from accessing a weapon in the first place. I hope, in memory of people like Mike, they'll implement stronger protective measures to prevent these tragedies from happening again. It's important that we continue to have discussions about improvements in mental health care and gun control policies, not just for the potential perpetrators, but for the safety of everyone. My thoughts are with all of the victims' families and friends during these tough times.
