I can’t stop thinking about the security measures (or lack thereof) that let Aaron Alexis access the Navy Yard. My heart goes out to Mary Knight’s family; I can't imagine the pain they must feel knowing that the system failed to protect her and others. Why was someone with known mental health struggles able to obtain a weapon so easily? I hope this tragedy prompts real changes in security protocols and mental health evaluations for access to sensitive environments. It's devastating to think that something that could potentially have been prevented resulted in such a loss. We must do better to ensure that this kind of tragedy never happens again.
