I’ve been following the tragic case of Devonte D. Carthan, who was shot and killed back in August 2014, and it really brought to light the troubling surge in violence during that time. I keep thinking about the area where the incident happened—Roseland. It must be incredibly tough living in a neighborhood where such violence occurs. I can't imagine the fear and sadness for his family and friends, knowing a 17-year-old with his entire future ahead of him was taken so senselessly. It’s devastating to see how frequent these occurrences were in 2014, with young lives like Devonte’s being cut short. I hope there were efforts made afterward to address the violence and provide support to families affected by such tragic losses. It’s important to remember those impacted by gun violence and consider how communities can come together to prevent more tragedies like this in the future.
