Has anyone else been following the aftermath of Oron "Rocky" Giese's case? I was reflecting on the fact that Meagan Sayre got 18 months of probation and how Judge Ellington labeled the situation as a tragedy. I'm really torn about the whole thing. On one hand, a life was lost in such a senseless way, and that's something Giese’s family has to live with every day. On the other, Meagan is obviously carrying some kind of burden, too. I know sentencing is supposed to balance justice for the victim and opportunities for rehabilitation, but it's tough to wrap my head around how probation feels enough. Community service and restitution are part of it, yes, but how do you put a value on a human life? I often wonder how both families are coping with this balance. Have any of you been through something similar, either personally or know someone who has? I can’t imagine the mix of emotions, but I guess that’s what makes these cases so complex.
