I've been thinking a lot about the role of the police department in Nikki Shae Bascom's tragic murder, and I just can’t get over how deeply flawed the system was in her case. It's infuriating that someone in a position of authority like Mark Contreras could go unchecked for so long. Domestic violence is already such a devastating issue, and to have it compounded by the apparent negligence due to his status in the police force feels like such a betrayal to survivors everywhere. From what I’ve gathered, the lack of action really stands out. I mean, if we can't rely on law enforcement to protect and serve, especially in domestic violence situations, what kind of message does that send to victims who are brave enough to seek help? Nikki deserved so much better than to have her reports seemingly dismissed because of her abuser's position. Just tragic all around, and heartbreaking for her family to deal with a loss that seemed so preventable. Sending love and strength to everyone affected by this case. It’s a tough reminder that we’ve still got a lot of work to do when it comes to addressing domestic violence and the systemic issues in law enforcement.
