I’ve been following the tragic case of David McClure, and I keep thinking about how this young man’s life was cut short on what should have been one of the happiest days of the year. The fact that his murder was just one of many over that Christmas weekend is so distressing. It's hard not to think about the families who had to face the devastating loss of a loved one during what should have been a time of togetherness and celebration. David was just 24 years old, and it’s painful to realize that lurking beneath the stats and news reports are real people who had dreams, aspirations, and futures that were stolen. Chicago’s South Side has faced such a difficult path with these ongoing violence issues, and it’s clear that broader societal change is needed if we are to hope for a safer community for everyone. My thoughts and deepest sympathies are with David's family and the families of all those who lost their lives that weekend. It’s hard to imagine their pain, especially during the holidays.
