I’ve been reading up on Deputy Delbert L. Berry's case from 1973 and feel truly saddened for his family. He was just settling into his role in Apache County, having dedicated five years to law enforcement in McKinley County before that. It's tragic that his life was cut short merely two weeks into his new position. I can't even begin to imagine the shock and grief his wife and children must have experienced losing him this way. One detail that stands out to me is how the group that attacked him was linked with the American Indian Movement. It makes me wonder if there was a wider motive driving such a desperate and violent act. Was this purely opportunistic, or did it reflect broader tensions at the time? It's unsettling to think there might have been a bigger picture influencing such horrific actions. Deputy Berry’s bravery is clear in the way he approached the group without hesitation. It’s a heartbreaking reminder of the risks law enforcement officers face every day. Seeing the individual responsible for the shooting released after serving his sentence also raises questions about justice and the challenges of moving on from such a senseless crime. My thoughts are with Deputy Berry’s family, especially after all these years.

I’ve been reading about Deputy Delbert Berry's tragic case, and one detail that really struck me was how new he was to the Apache County Sheriff's Office. Only two weeks on the job is such a short time to be thrown into such a dangerous situation. It must've been incredibly hard for his family, who were likely just settling into their new routine. Thinking about his wife and three kids during that time gives me chills. They must have been filled with hope and excitement for a fresh start, only to have their lives shattered so suddenly. It’s a reminder of the risks our law enforcement officers face every day, often without warning. Sending deep condolences to his family, though I know no amount of time can truly heal that kind of loss. I also find it pretty emotional that he had served in law enforcement for over five years before this, facing unknown dangers daily. Yet, such a senseless act took him away just like that. It’s sobering. Rest in peace, Deputy Berry. Your service and sacrifice are not forgotten.
