I've been thinking a lot about the sheer bravery of the detective who tried to stop Shane James during that horrible day. It's easy to overlook the officers who put themselves in such dangerous situations, but this detective, despite being injured, played a crucial role in bringing this ordeal to an end. Katherine and Lauren's loss is devastating, and while nothing can bring them back, I find some solace knowing there are people willing to risk their lives to protect our communities. My heart goes out to the Short family. I hope this case encourages more dialogue about supporting both victims and our law enforcement officers who face these traumatic events.

As a retired Army officer myself, I find it hard to wrap my head around how someone like Shane James, who also has a military background, could reach such a point of desperation and violence.
