On December 5, 2023, Katherine Short, 56, and her daughter, Lauren Short, 30, were tragically killed in their Austin, Texas, home during a violent crime spree. The incident began when Katherine's husband observed, via a live security feed, a man forcefully entering their residence on Austral Loop. He immediately contacted 911, reporting that his wife and daughter were inside the home.
Austin Police Department (APD) officers responded promptly to the reported burglary in progress.
Upon arrival, an APD detective encountered the intruder, identified as 34-year-old Shane James, in the backyard. James opened fire, injuring the detective, and then fled the scene in a vehicle stolen from the Shorts' residence. Following a high-speed pursuit, James was apprehended after crashing the stolen vehicle at the intersection of SH 45 and FM 1826.
