On December 5, 2023, 24-year-old Sabrina Rahman was tragically killed in a shooting incident in South Austin, Texas. The incident occurred around noon in the 7300 block of Shadywood Drive, where Rahman and 32-year-old family friend and handyman, Emmanuel Pop Ba, were fatally shot. Rahman had just moved into a new home with her husband and their one-year-old son the day before the shooting.
According to reports, Pop Ba was sitting in his vehicle during a lunch break when the assailant approached and shot him. Rahman, who was out for a walk with her baby in a stroller, witnessed the shooting and attempted to flee. Demonstrating remarkable bravery, she pushed the stroller toward a neighbor's house to protect her child. The gunman pursued Rahman and fatally shot her, narrowly missing the baby, who was unharmed.
The suspect, identified as 34-year-old Shane James, was arrested later that evening after a series of violent incidents across Austin and Bexar County. James is believed to have begun his crime spree by killing his parents in Bexar County before traveling to Austin, where he committed multiple shootings, including the murders of Rahman and Pop Ba. He has been charged with capital murder and is in custody awaiting trial.
Rahman's family and community have been left devastated by her loss. Her husband, Ishraq Islam, described her as an "angel" and a devoted mother who sacrificed her life to save their son. The family had relocated to what they believed was a safer neighborhood, making the tragedy even more poignant. Vigils and memorials have been held in her honor, as the community mourns the loss of a young mother taken too soon.
