I've been thinking a lot about the firearm used in this tragic case, especially knowing it was registered to Jessica. It just breaks my heart to think she might have believed having a gun would keep her family safe. It’s such a complex issue when domestic violence is involved. When someone tries to leave an abusive relationship or when there’s an attempt at reconciliation, the dynamics can be incredibly dangerous. It’s not uncommon for victims to feel conflicted about their safety and the hope that things might get better. Given Jose's prior convictions, he shouldn’t have had access to a gun at all. This makes me wonder about how firearms safety and access are handled in situations like these, especially in homes where previous violence has occurred. Is there any protocol or support for victims to ensure their firearms remain out of reach from those legally barred from having them? We need to find ways to do a better job at supporting victims and educating about the risks, not to mention ensuring that protective restraining measures are genuinely effective. My thoughts are with the families and friends grieving this unimaginable loss, and I hope we can use this tragedy to advocate for better protections.
