I keep thinking about Xiujuan Yu and how she finally decided to embrace a new experience by going to the dance studio that night. It’s such a stark contrast—taking a brave step into something new, surrounded by joy and celebration, only for tragedy to strike. My heart goes out to her children and family who have to navigate this unimaginable loss. It's also sobering to think that these places meant for joy can turn into scenes of horror due to gun violence. I wasn't aware that the gun Tran used was illegal in California, which makes it even more frustrating. How did he even get his hands on it? I hope with all my heart that Ms. Yu’s story and others like hers urge stronger moves toward curbing this violence. Her bravery in stepping out for the first time, only to face such a fate, deserves to be remembered and honored. Sending all my love to her family through this difficult time.
