There are many peculiar details surrounding the disappearance of Shayne Bassett. (he went by Shayne) The cardboard box his son was found in at the state house in Massachusetts just being one of them. The location of where his son was placed has always felt intentional and specific to his family. Shayne would not have left his son in a cardboard box in a diaper with only a towel wrapped around him in early April. This was Easter Sunday fyi for everyone to consider. Shayne was reported missing to the local police department within 48 hours of when he was last seen by his family. That was Saturday evening before Easter he picked up his son from his brother's house in Boscawen and was supposed to head to his sister's house for Easter as there was family visiting from Canada. When he never showed and didn't answer phone calls the family went to his home to investigate and found the scene. Part of the problem with this case is it wasn't given a lot of attention when it happened and years later the family struggled to get it on the NH cold case list as Franklin PD lost the case file sometime after 1977. Shayne had made mistakes in his life but was turning things around for his children. Someone close to him and those mistakes robbed him of his life and his son's from knowing their father. This family has grieved and continues to grieve every time the case resurfaces. Unfortunately there will likely never be any resolution because of the lost case file and the time that has passed.

Thank you for sharing this, and I’m so sorry for what your family has carried all these years. The Easter timing, the location at the State House, and the lost case file are heartbreaking and important context. If anyone reading this remembers anything from that Easter weekend in 1977—Franklin, NH or near the MA State House—please come forward. Even the smallest detail could matter.

I was recently reading about Stanley Shayne Bassett's case and found myself fixated on something I hadn't considered before: the cardboard box. It's a peculiar detail, isn't it? The fact that his infant son was left on the steps of the Massachusetts State House seems incredibly intentional. Does anyone else think this might have been a way to ensure the baby would be found quickly and safely? It makes me curious about whether Stanley intended to safeguard his son amidst a chaotic situation or if someone else might have been trying to send a message—or even cover up something bigger. What do you guys think? This part of the story feels like it holds more clues than we might realize. Would love to hear everyone's thoughts!
I've been thinking about Stanley Bassett's case a lot lately, especially the moment his son was found on the steps of the Massachusetts State House. It's just so strange and specific, you know? Why there? I can’t help but wonder if it was meant to be symbolic or send some kind of message. The State House is such a public place; it almost feels like someone wanted the baby to be found immediately. It's baffling how someone can vanish so completely while leaving such a public clue behind. Anyone else have thoughts on the significance of that location or theories on why it was chosen?
Has anyone else looked into the circumstances around Stanley Bassett's disappearance with regard to his dogs? It's just perplexing to me. From what I've read, he was super close to them. Friends and family mentioned how devoted he was—a real animal lover through and through. They were more like family than pets to him. It seems bizarre that he'd leave them behind without care or a plan. Could something have happened so abruptly that he was forced away without any choice? I know some people think his past legal troubles might have caught up with him, but to leave so suddenly and not make any arrangements for his beloved dogs? It just doesn’t add up to me. Maybe there's something more we're missing about what happened that day. Thoughts?
