The recent tragedy in Chattanooga has been weighing heavily on my mind. My heart goes out to the Smith family and everyone affected by this unimaginable loss. I've been thinking a lot about the importance of recognizing the warning signs of abuse, especially after reading that Jessica had unexplained bruises. It's so easy to overlook or dismiss these signs when they're not directly affecting us, but this case is a stark reminder that we all need to be more vigilant and supportive of those around us. I attended the candlelight vigil at Barger Academy, and it was so moving to see the community come together. Hearing stories and fond memories shared about Jessica and little Ailin was both beautiful and heartbreaking. It highlighted just how loved they were and how deeply they'll be missed. I also wanted to mention the GoFundMe campaign set up for their funeral expenses. The generosity of those who donated is incredible, showing that even in the darkest times, there's light in how we care for one another. Let’s all continue to support the family in any way we can and remember to speak up and look out for each other. Stay safe, everyone.

Has anyone else been thinking about the impact these tragedies have on the kids' classmates and friends? Little Ailin was only six, just beginning her journey in school. I can't even imagine how her classmates must be feeling. Do schools usually have counselors come in to talk to the kids, or do they just leave it to the families to explain? When something as awful as this happens, it's crucial to provide extra support for the little ones processing such a confusing loss. I read about the candlelight vigil at Barger Academy and hope that it offered some comfort, but the healing journey has to go beyond that. Does anyone with experience in elementary education or counseling have ideas on the best ways to help these young minds understand? My heart goes out to everyone touched by this, especially the kids who now have to cope with losing a friend.
