I'm still reeling from the news of the shooting in Lawncrest and wanted to bring up the role schools might play in this. It's incredibly difficult to digest that Salah Fleming was only 14 and still in eighth grade at Mathematics, Civics and Sciences Charter School. It’s comforting that the school has brought in grief counselors to support the students and staff, who must be deeply affected right now. But it also makes me think about whether more can be done within schools to prevent these tragedies. Are there enough programs teaching conflict resolution, or offering support to kids who might be facing pressures outside of school? Perhaps involving them in more community activities or mentorship programs could help. I wish there were easier answers, but I’m hopeful that by fostering strong community bonds and support networks, we can better protect our youth. Would love to hear if anyone else has thoughts on community initiatives or school programs that could make a difference.
