I've been closely following the discussion around the recent tragedy at Oliver Citywide Academy, and I can't help but feel for Derrick Harris's friends and family. The ripple effects of such a senseless act extend far beyond just the immediate loss; they impact every single person who knew and cared about him. It's truly distressing to think that a place meant for learning and growth has been tainted by violence yet again. It's particularly harrowing to consider how students in schools like Oliver Citywide Academy must feel right now. Knowing this isn’t an isolated incident but a horrific repeat must make returning to any semblance of normal life incredibly challenging. Schools should be safe havens, and seeing two similar events occur in such a short span raises red flags that demand urgent attention. Reading about Pittsburgh Mayor Gainey's response does offer some hope that there might be systemic changes on the horizon. His acknowledgment of the cultural issues surrounding violence and his call to action is the kind of leadership we need right now. Hopefully, tighter controls on access to firearms, particularly for young people, will be a priority moving forward. Let's keep Derrick and his loved ones in our thoughts and hope for a future where we no longer have to mourn young lives lost to violence.
