It's hard to fathom what the families of Jaylen Carey and Derrick Monger must be going through right now. Thinking about the young life of Jaylen, only 17, and Derrick, who surely had a family and friends who cared about him, really puts a knot in my stomach. I’ve been following this case closely, and something that continues to baffle me is the level of violence that unfolded so rapidly. It seems like one moment everything was tense, and the next, it escalated into a tragedy that no one can take back. Now, with the arrests of so many people linked to the retaliatory shooting, I keep wondering about the ripple effects on the Ahoskie community. It’s not just about the immediate families; it’s about all those friends, neighbors, and even acquaintances who are now coping with such heavy losses and the fear it instills. I’m grateful law enforcement is stepping in to piece everything together, but I hope there’s a bigger conversation about how we can prevent this sort of escalation in the future. It shouldn't take a tragedy to want change. My thoughts are with everyone involved, especially Joshua Tann, who must be dealing with so much right now.
