I've been reading about Seychelle Schaumburg's heartbreaking case, and something that's really resonating with me is how unprepared we are as a community to handle situations where someone has a known history of criminal behavior but slips through the cracks until something this devastating happens. Why wasn't more done to monitor Coleman McIlvain, considering his past offenses? Could better tracking or intervention have prevented this tragedy? It's frustrating and saddening to think that Seychelle and her children might have been failed by a system that should protect them. My heart goes out to the surviving daughter and hope she's feeling the love and support from everyone rallying around her. She's going to need all the care and support we can offer as she heals from this unimaginable ordeal. How can we push for changes that could help prevent situations like this in the future?
