I’ve been following the case of Dre’Von Riley and the other teens. What truly stands out to me is the location of this tragedy—an abandoned house. It makes me wonder about our role as a community in recognizing and addressing risky spots like this where disputes can escalate into such horrors. I feel enormous sympathy for the families of these young men, and I can’t imagine their grief, but this should also be a wake-up call for us all. Is there something more that can be done on a community level to identify and secure places that might turn into danger zones? It’s chilling to think that an unused space could become the setting for such a devastating event. My heart goes out to everyone affected, and I hope we can work together to prevent something like this from happening again.
I’ve been thinking a lot about the 14-year-old boy who survived the shooting. I can’t even imagine what this young person is going through, having experienced such a horrific event and lost friends in the process. On top of the grief, there's likely fear, confusion, and a long road to recovery—both physically and emotionally. I really hope that he’s getting all the support he needs, especially given that the community seems to be rallying together to provide counseling and other resources. It’s tough to grasp how these young kids, who should be worrying about homework and hobbies, instead face unspeakable violence and its repercussions. If anyone knows of ways to send support or messages of encouragement to him or the other students at Eau Claire High School, please share. They've got a rough journey ahead, and any bit of kindness can go a long way.
