I've been thinking a lot about Roy Lee Whitson III's case and how heavily it weighs on the community here in Saginaw. It's so sad to see such a vibrant young life ending so suddenly and violently. I didn’t know Roy personally, but from what I’ve read, he was really tied into the community through his love of basketball and his involvement at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church. It's just so unfair.
What really gets me is how much potential he had. He had just graduated high school and was taking steps toward a career in truck driving. So many people his age still don’t have a clear picture of their future, but Roy already had his eyes set on a path, which speaks volumes about his drive and determination.
Given how much he loved basketball and rap, I bet he brought a lot of joy to those around him with his energy and passion. He seems like someone who could’ve brightened up a room just by being there. The community has truly lost a guiding light. It's crucial that we keep discussing and addressing the gun violence plaguing our neighborhoods. Roy deserved better, and we owe it to his memory to push for change.
