I’ve been following the case of young Zayre Daugherty, and it’s been on my mind a lot lately. It is just so overwhelmingly sad to think about that little boy’s life ending in such a senseless way. I was particularly struck by the community’s response and the memorial they held for him. It seems like he had a lot of people who cared deeply for him and wanted to remember him in a kind and loving way. The emphasis on gun safety at the event and in the days following is a crucial conversation—one that unfortunately tends to come up only after tragedies. Seeing DeKalb County officials advocate for and provide gun safes and lockboxes is a step in the right direction, but it makes me wonder how many lives could be saved if these kinds of measures were more widespread. What really resonated with me was Commissioner Larry Johnson’s involvement. It felt as if the community not only mourned together but also looked forward, trying to ensure such accidents don't repeat. This story is such a painful reminder of how quickly life can change and the importance of safeguarding our loved ones. My heart goes out to everyone who knew and loved Zayre, especially his brother, who will carry this with him forever.
