Terry Wayne Holstein, 32, of Alkol, West Virginia, was shot multiple times and died on December 20, 2023, following a Wednesday morning shooting in the Sumerco area of Lincoln County. The incident drew West Virginia State Police to the 1700 block of Midway Road near Route 214 after a 9:00 a.m. emergency call. Emergency crews flew Holstein by medical helicopter from the Route 214 and U.S. Route 119 intersection, but he later died of his injuries.

State Police said Holstein was struck four times and described the incident as connected to a civil dispute; reports indicated he and the shooter knew each other. Investigators reported a person connected to the shooting was cooperating and that the case was being considered as one that could involve a claim of self-defense. No suspect had been publicly identified, no one was reported in custody, and no charges had been announced at the time.
