I was reading about the tragic events in Lamoine back in 2012, and something that's really stuck with me is the role that fear seemed to play in the lead-up to that awful night. Neighbors mentioned Robert Tilden's fear of his son Leon, which just breaks my heart. It's terrifying to think about living in fear of someone so close to you, and it makes me wonder about what could have been done differently. Why wasn't more done to address whatever issues Leon might have been experiencing? There was clearly something going on with his behavior leading up to the incident, yet there doesn't seem to be any formal history of intervention or help.
I've often seen discussions about how challenging it can be to get mental health support for loved ones, especially when they don’t seek it themselves. It's a small community, so maybe resources were limited, but it makes me think about the importance of community and even smaller steps we can take to look after one another. Has anyone else followed this case and had similar thoughts? It feels like an important conversation to have, even many years later, to prevent such tragedies moving forward. My thoughts go out to all the families affected.
