On March 27, 2014, 59-year-old Debi Robinson Roberts of Gardiner, Montana, was found fatally wounded inside her home after a call reporting a man shooting at a woman and trying to force his way in. Park County deputies and Yellowstone National Park rangers discovered a man dead at the scene and Roberts alive but gravely injured; she died at the scene. The man was identified as 63-year-old Steve A. Cole. Investigators reported the deaths as an apparent murder-suicide, with preliminary findings indicating Cole fatally wounded Roberts and then took his own life. Cole had a prior domestic violence charge, and no other individuals were sought in connection with the deaths.
