On the morning of February 14, 2019, 54-year-old William Melton was shot and killed at a residence in Coram, Montana. The shooting happened at about 1:30 a.m., and authorities say it followed a dispute. Responding officers found Melton had died from his injuries.
A 19-year-old, Martin Chandler, fled the scene but witnesses described the vehicle he was driving and it was later located near Columbia Falls. A traffic stop brought Chandler into custody without incident; he was charged with deliberate homicide and held without bail. Investigators said Chandler and Melton were acquainted, though the exact nature of that relationship was not specified. Prosecutors later reported the argument that led to the shooting may have involved methamphetamine. Chandler’s record included prior accusations of burglary, assault, disorderly conduct, and criminal mischief.
If anyone knew William Melton or saw activity around the Coram residence that night, please share what was seen or heard.
