In June 2019, 24-year-old Hannah Janiak, her partner Daniel Salcido, and their two-year-old son Aiden were reported missing after Janiak failed to appear for a jail sentence in Jackson County, Oregon. The family, described by relatives as homeless and camping around Medford, Oregon, was last seen on surveillance video buying camping gear with the child in early June.

On July 24, 2019, Montana authorities stopped a green 1996 GMC Jimmy near Whitefish after the occupants gave false names. Salcido fled a traffic stop and a police pursuit ended when spike strips disabled the vehicle. Officers found both Janiak and Salcido dead in the SUV; investigators concluded Salcido shot Janiak and then himself. Their son Aiden was not in the vehicle.

A multi-state search followed; Aiden’s body was later found in a remote wooded area of Lincoln County, Montana and an autopsy confirmed he had been shot in the head.
