On the evening of July 17, 2022, a family walking in East Glacier Park, Montana, was attacked when a man deliberately drove a pickup into the group. The driver, identified as Derick Amos Madden, then crashed into a tree, emerged with a shotgun and began shooting. David Siau, 39, was killed at the scene. As family members fled, Madden shot Christy Siau and fatally wounded her 1-year-old daughter McKenzie, who was declared dead after arrival at the hospital.

Madden ran out of ammunition, drew a knife and assaulted Christina Siau, David’s sister. Critically wounded in both the vehicle collision and the stabbing, Christina fought back and fatally wounded Madden, ending the attack. Christy and Christina survived their injuries; two other young children present escaped without physical harm. Investigators linked Madden and Christina by a prior relationship and noted his history of mental health issues.
