I’ve been following the tragic incident involving John-Paul Birgenheier and Charles Richmond, and one aspect that's been puzzling me is the lack of clarity on the defense's self-defense claim. Given Richmond's age and the earlier confrontation, it seems plausible he might have genuinely felt threatened. But the fact he walked over to Birgenheier's camper with a shotgun makes things feel premeditated, or at least not purely defensive. It's tragic to think that unresolved tensions over something seemingly as minor as a missing bong could escalate to this level. I can’t imagine how John-Paul's family must feel, knowing his life was cut short in such a violent way. Thoughts for both families; it's just a sad situation all around. What do others think about the self-defense angle in this case? Does it hold up, or did the jury get it right with second-degree?
