I’ve been thinking a lot about Deputy Windham’s family lately. It’s hard to imagine the impact this ambush must have had on his wife and kids. Losing someone so suddenly and violently must have been devastating for them, especially back in 1927 when there was probably less support available for families of officers killed in the line of duty. I also wonder how they coped with seeing the assailants face a reduced sentence. The initial life sentence for the step-father was already a lot to deal with, but I imagine the retrial and eventual 20-year sentence was yet another blow to them. I hope over time they found some peace and comfort in the memories of his bravery and dedication to duty. His sacrifice should never be forgotten.
