On September 18, 1927, Deputy Sheriff Adus Egypsia Windham, aged 43, was fatally shot in an ambush near Cedar Grove Church in Midland City, Alabama. The incident occurred while Deputy Windham and his colleague, Deputy Sheriff Arthur Lee Kelley, were enforcing local prohibition laws.
