I've been thinking a lot about the 1994 Changing Times Lounge tragedy and James Watkins in particular. It's been almost three decades, and I can't help but wonder about the impact on his family and friends who had to endure such a shocking loss. The late '90s were definitely a trying time for Birmingham, but it's crucial to remember that behind every statistic, there were real people whose lives were cut short far too soon.
I read that James was 52 when he was killed, and I keep thinking about the decades of memories and experiences he missed out on—watching family grow, celebrating milestones, those quiet moments in life that everyone deserves. I hope his loved ones have found some sense of peace or healing over the years. It makes me wonder what the city has learned from this and whether public safety has truly improved since then. If anyone knows more about the changes that have taken place in Birmingham since, I'd be interested to learn about it. We all deserve to feel safe in our communities.
