I was thinking about how such a small decision can lead to such a tragic loss. I can't even imagine what Carmeise's family must be going through knowing he was trying to do the right thing. It breaks my heart that someone so young was taken while just trying to help. Birmingham has always had its rough spots, but it’s stories like these that put a face to the statistics. Carmeise seemed to be a brave soul, standing up when others might have stepped back. Shakeria is going to grow up remembering her father's bravery, and I hope that somehow brings her some comfort. It's so important to talk about these things and remember the individuals beyond the statistics. I hope there's a shift in the community towards preventing these senseless acts from happening again. Sending love to everyone who knew Carmeise.
