I’ve been following the case of Tavaris Pettway, and I keep thinking about how devastating it is for his family and friends. I can’t imagine the pain they’re going through, especially considering Tavaris had such a bright future ahead of him. What struck me recently was reading about how the community is reacting to his death. It’s both deeply sad and frustrating to see that it took such a tragedy to spotlight the issue of youth violence again. I hope that city leaders and law enforcement will take this as a wake-up call to increase their efforts in curbing violence. It seems like losing a young life like Tavaris’s could become a catalyst for change, but it shouldn’t have to start with such a loss. My thoughts go out to everyone who knew and loved Tavaris. It’s essential we focus on how to prevent this from happening to someone else. Community initiatives or youth programs might help, but what are some other ways we can support these efforts?
