On the night of August 26, 2016, 27-year-old Treyvon Johnson was killed in a mass attack on the 300 block of 34th Street NE in the River Terrace neighborhood of Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Police officers responding just after 11:30 p.m. found Johnson and 40-year-old Raeshard Blue on a sidewalk with multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency responders treated both; Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene and Blue later died at a hospital.

A third person was found nearby with multiple stab wounds and survived after being taken to a local hospital. Gunfire that night also damaged three vehicles. Police opened an intensive investigation and offered a substantial reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction, but no arrests or suspect descriptions were released in the immediate aftermath.
