James Patrick Tenor Jr., 54, was found fatally stabbed in an alley behind a residence on the 400 block of Buchanan Street NW in the Petworth neighborhood of Northwest Washington, D.C. Police discovered him on the evening of October 13, 2016; he was pronounced dead at the scene. Neighbors called him Jimmy and described him as a good neighbor who often helped with yard work and other small favors.

The motive for the attack is unknown. Some neighbors speculated it might have been a robbery gone wrong, but they did not believe Tenor was involved in criminal activity. The Metropolitan Police Department opened an investigation and appealed for public tips, offering a reward for information leading to a conviction. No arrests or publicly identified suspects have been announced and the case remains open.
