Reading about Mohamed Alkhater’s tragic murder takes me back to that awful year for Memphis. It’s just shocking to think that despite so much effort from the Mayor and law enforcement, cases like his remain unsolved. I can't even begin to imagine the pain his family must still feel, not having any closure. One thing that always puzzles me about these cases is the role of gun violence. It seems like every strategy proposed at the time just couldn’t catch up to the pace at which these crimes happened. The neighborhoods that were affected were already dealing with so much, and this just added a heavy weight on them. For Alkhater’s family and others in these communities, it must feel like being stuck in an endless cycle of grief and fear. I hope that as a city, Memphis continues to push for change and create safer environments, although it's daunting knowing how long-term many of these solutions are. Holding on to the hope that justice will come for Mohamed and that, maybe one day, his family will find peace.
