It's so unsettling to think about how Robert's disappearance was handled back in 1980. The fact that no one noticed he was gone until hours after he wandered away is hard to wrap my head around, especially considering the harsh weather conditions that day. You'd think there'd be some stronger protocols in place at a facility like that, especially for someone as vulnerable as Robert. It just makes me wonder if things would have turned out differently if they had launched the search earlier. Knowing the massive snowstorm was happening, the delay in notifying authorities seems like such a critical misstep. Does anyone know if there were any policy changes after his case?

Has anyone delved into the weather conditions on the day Robert Ahtonen disappeared? I was looking into the blizzard that hit Newberry, Michigan, on January 21, 1980, and it seems pretty intense. Knowing how quickly temperatures can drop during such storms, I wonder if the delayed response in searching for him due to the storm conditions played a part in why Robert wasn't found. Such severe weather could hinder both visibility and safety for search parties. It makes me question if more could’ve been done despite the blizzard or if that was just an unfortunate risk given the circumstances at the time. Has anyone come across reports or witness accounts about how extensive the search was under those conditions?
