I've been thinking a lot about the immense bravery of Corazon Amurao, the lone survivor of that dreadful night. Her courage in the face of unimaginable terror is something that astounds me every time I read about this case. Not only did she have the presence of mind to hide and stay silent, but she also managed to give a detailed account that was essential for identifying Speck. Her experience must have been profoundly traumatizing, and yet she carried the weight of her testimony bravely through the trial. I can't even begin to imagine the strength it took to relive those moments in front of a courtroom full of people, to help ensure that justice would be served for her friends. It's a small comfort knowing that she survived that horror, but it reminds me of the unimaginable losses that those other families faced when they lost their daughters, sisters, and friends. She was truly a beacon of strength amidst such tragedy.
